Getting in my own way

Someone once told me that they thought I needed to play competitive sports, do something competitive, anything competitive! I declined. They asked why. I said that I compete with myself. I am my own competition. I set up my own hurdles to jump over. I set the bar very high for myself, sometimes I land it most times I don’t.

I don’t need to play a game or sport against others to get the satisfaction of competing.

I push myself. I am self-motivated, self-driven. Both a blessing and a curse. I am also extremely hard on myself. While I may not need external forces to set out and do a thing, external forces would probably be a little easier on me, would probably set the bar lower. Setting the bar lower would just insult me, though. I have always viewed life as glass half-full, have never approached a difficult situation with a negative outcome in mind, and always move the bar up higher.

My track coach in high school told us that when we weren’t training our competition was, and when we met them they would beat us.

So keep training. Keep working. Keep moving. Don’t stop. Always push farther, faster, higher. Doing so keeps the competition to ourselves, and when we meet ourselves we will win. And whoever the eventual opponent is doesn’t stand a chance.

That was the mentality. Looking back on it now I see a lot of potential negatives, but also a lot of potential positives as-well. I understand the spirit of what we were taught.

And so that is how I am going to head into this week which seems to be impossible at the moment, too much to get done and not enough time to do it in...competing against myself and I will win :-)

Have a great Monday!
