Prime the Mind - Morning Routines
Yesterday I was up early, close to 4:30. I wanted to make sure my morning routine could get in plus some work before I was out all day to teach Mozzie (I’ve been covering Friday school days with him for the past two months). It was great, it was like old times for me. I got in what is needed for me to have a healthy start to the day and by the time I arrived for school had already been up and moving for 5 hours.
4:30 used to be my normal start time and with yesterday and today both working out it makes me want to get back to that time of day. There is just something about early starts. It opens up so much more time, at least in my mind it does. I think the important point here is that the early start is used to help prime the day ahead. I am not using the early start to begin working immediately (but, what is “work” and what is “not work”? Questions to answer in a future post...hey Siri! Remind me...just kidding, I don’t use Siri for that. I’ll write it down in my notebook). I use the early start to make sure I have time to prepare my mind for the day ahead.
Because this is how the time is used I am more likely to succeed at doing it. This is the only reason I was successful all those years ago when it was a regular thing for me: that time in the morning was “my” time. Most of the world is still asleep. No one is calling. No one is texting. No one is emailing. No one is trying to get my attention. I can focus on getting my mind in a place that will help to ensure the rest of my day is as successful as possible.
And so let’s do it. As Maique said: “if you want it, you can do it!” Agreed, brother. Thanks for the nudge!
For kicks and giggles, here’s my routine before I fully immerse myself in “work”:
- make bed / make coffee / brush teeth / etc
- journal, empty the brain, morning pages
- gratitude log, at least three items
- establish goal tasks for the day ahead
- write here and publish it
- read (something business related or adjacent)
- eat breakfast
- shower
- walk
What is your morning/primer routine like? I’d love to hear from you!
So, with this published I can move into the reading portion of the morning 📚.

Grateful log for Sat, 30 Mar 2024
- A good school day with Mozzie yesterday. It was our last, but he asked if there was any way to continue. Will see what is possible.
- Played “Life” as a family after dinner last night.
- Up early again for another packed day.
I use the early start to make sure I have time to prepare my mind for the day ahead.
